Sponsoring Young Adults in Global Mission

Trinity Lutheran Church in East Berlin had a history of sponsoring missionaries, but those efforts had dwindled in recent years. Pastor George Scott met the Rev. Lanny Westphal, former ELCA Director for Global Church Sponsorship, last fall at Bishop's Convocation and discovered some of the ways the congregation might reconnect with their global missions roots. Westphal suggested sponsoring a missionary or a Young Adult in Global Mission (YAGM) to "build interest, awareness, and a personal connection."

Pastor Scott brought this idea back to Trinity, and over the course of several months, the congregation discussed the idea both at council meetings and in one-to-one conversations. The council was particularly intrigued by the idea of sponsoring a YAGM from Pennsylvania. "When they found out there were two, Becky and Hannah, serving this year, they decided to sponsor both of them with $1,000 each, using funds from our endowment," Scott said. "It is our congregation's way of sharing the abundance of God's gifts in support of God's work in the world."
